"Integrated Photonic Systems: Opportunities from High-Speed Communication to Bio-Chemical Sensing"

This talk provides an overview of opportunities for the use of integrated photonic systems in key high-speed communication and bio-chemical sensing applications. Driven by our networked society and the Internet of Things, mega-datacenters now contain more than 100K servers which require a massive amount of digital interconnect. Due to low optical channel loss and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) techniques, integrated photonic interconnect architectures have the potential to dramatically scale interconnect bandwidth-density in an energy-efficient manner to address the needs of future data centers and supercomputers. Integrated photonics can also be leveraged in analog signal processing for future wireless broad-band communications applications. For example, the high quality factor and rapid dynamic tuning capabilities of integrated optical filters provides the potential to enable future multi-function radios with ultra-wide instantaneous bandwidth and rapid reconfiguration. Another exciting application of integrated photonics is in bio-chemical sensing, where systems have been proposed for dielectric and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy. This talk will first describe on-going integrated photonic research in high-speed communication applications. Specifically, the design details of a hybrid integrated multi-channel 25+Gb/s silicon photonic/CMOS WDM transceiver prototype for digital interconnects and a proposed wideband frequency-agile silicon photonic mm-wave receiver will be presented. Also discussed are potential collaboration opportunities in integrated photonic systems for bio-chemical sensing applications. The talk concludes with a discussion on a proposed integrated photonic systems center at Texas A&M.
