"Difference Parametric Amplification: how do you recognize it when you see it?"

ABSTRACT 

Driving coupled resonators can exhibit optical parametric amplification; a big photon (high energy) splits into two smaller ones. Difference parametric amplification is mathematically close to optical parametric amplification, but appears to imply, something energetically forbidden; that a small photon splits into two big ones. Can this process happen at all? A classical analysis shows the relation between OPA and DPA and distinguishes a characteristic feature. This setups the discussion whether one should search for this, or that the absence of a photon picture makes this irrelevant. It appears that the answer is unclear, making this an interesting problem to study.
