"Enhancing Coherent Anti-Stokes spectroscopy"

Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) has been widely used in many applications in both spectroscopy and microscopy. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy are two complimentary techniques which can reveal molecular structural information. Typically, infrared light is used in IR spectroscopy while visible light is used in Raman spectroscopy. Here we show that IR light can be used to enhance coherent Raman techniques. Certain cases are considered which can help to get better sensitivity and/or specificity. First, Mid-infrared Assisted Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering (MIRA CARS) uses mid-IR to enhance coherence generated between rovibrational levels of molecules via two photon resonance. Second case is the Femtosecond Adaptive Spectroscopic Technique via Coherent Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering II (FAST-CARS II). Both techniques utilize intermodal transitions of molecules of interest, which is of great importance in bridging the coherent Raman and IR sources.
