A view of early Earth observing satellite technology and science
Early satellite observations in the 1960’s and 1970’s provided the foundation for today’s rapidly growing Earth Observing enterprise. Government, academic and private sector initiatives now bring satellite data and services into the daily lives of millions. This paper reviews some of the early technology advances and failures, lessons learned and atmospheric science discoveries including the first measurements of Earth’s Radiation Budget.
We conclude with time for discussion of science advances beyond the early years and new horizons planned for the future.
