Fractal laser modes, speckle-free optical imaging, water optics, and other fascinating topics in optical physics and engineering
EVENT DETAILS: Recent experiments at Illinois have generated fundamental and higher-order laser fractal modes and literally thousands of microlaser beams from a single microresonator. The application of this rather unusual optical source to speckle-free imaging of Drosophila (the common fruit fly) and other fast-moving objects will be described. Photolithography at 172 nm, first demonstrated several years ago, has opened the door to a new world of optical components and devices, including water optics and phase forks. These and other delightful developments, such as the realization of plasma photonic crystals operating in the 100-300 GHz region of the electromagnetic spectrum, will be presented.
