Kharkov University was established in the beginning of 19-th century, one of the oldest and most respectful Universities in the Tsar Russia. The Golden Age for physics and mathematics in Kharkov came in the years 1930-1950, when the great scientists Lev Landau and Lev Shubnikov and their disciples worked there. Simultaneously the famous mathematicians Naum Akhiezer, Alexei Pogorelov, Vladimir Marchenko and others developed a new mathematics. This blossoming of science was tragically interfered with Stalin’s purges.

In this talk a brief characteristics of Kharkov (now Kharkiv) physicists and mathematicians and their science will be presented. The speaker graduated from Kharkov University in 1953 and had a privilege and happiness of personal contacts with some of these remarkable people.
